Abstract

Establishing the material balance of metamorphic processes, in addition to solving general scientific geological problems, also has purely practical significance for successfully solving problems related to the safe conduct of mining operations. These problems are associated with the potential manifestation of hazardous properties of coal seams, which are caused by increased release of flammable and explosive gases, sudden outbursts of coal, rock, and gas, the occurrence of endogenous fires, and other adverse phenomena that complicate mining operations. For these reasons, scientific research related to establishing the material balance at different stages of metamorphic transformations of coal seams is relevant both for geological science as a whole and for solving local practical problems related to the safe development of coal deposits. The aim of this work is to develop a methodology for determining the material balance of metamorphic processes, taking into account the individual characteristics of each coal seam. The study resulted in conclusions and recommendations on the feasibility of applying the developed method to assessing the hazardous properties of coal seams and ensuring safe mining operations.
